Cloning, Tissue Expression Analysis, and Functional Characterization of Two Δ6-Desaturase Variants of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) ArchiMer
Santigosa, Ester; Geay, Florian; Tonon, Thierry; Le Delliou, Herve; Kuhl, Heiner; Reinhardt, Richard; Corcos, Laurent; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Mazurais, David.
Fish are the main source of the n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids, which are crucial for human health. Their synthesis from C18 precursors is mediated by desaturases and elongases, but the activity of these enzymes has not been conclusively established in marine fish species. This study reports the cloning, tissue expression, and functional characterization of a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) Δ6-desaturase and one of its splicing variants. Two cDNAs with open reading frames of 1,346 and 1,354 bp were cloned and named D6D and D6D-V, respectively. Both deduced protein sequences (445 and 387 amino acids, respectively) contained two transmembrane regions and the N-terminal cytochrome b5 domain with the HPGG motif characteristic of microsomal desaturases....

Clustering of ingredients with amino acid composition similar to the nutritional requirement of Nile tilapia Scientia Agricola
Bicudo,Álvaro José de Almeida; Pinto,Luis Fernando Batista; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
The search for balanced diets, which may elicit improved growth of fish, requires appropriate selection of available protein sources. This study aims at clustering feedstuffs according to amino acid profile, determining which ones show essential amino acids (EAA) profiles closer to the ideal dietary amino acids requirements of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and studying the relationship among amino acids feedstuffs groups. Tabled data on EAA more cystine and tyrosine, in relation to lysine contents, of 40 feedstuffs ordinarily used to formulate fish diets were studied. Feedstuffs were grouped according to amino acids profile by cluster analysis of Euclidean distances. The principal components analysis was used to determine the relationship among...

Comparative cytogenetics of Astyanax (Teleostei: Characidae) from the upper Paraguay basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Teixeira,Thais K. S. S.; Venere,Paulo C.; Ferreira,Daniela C.; Mariotto,Sandra; Castro,Jonathan P.; Artoni,Roberto F.; Centofante,Liano.
ABSTRACT Astyanax is one of the most abundant and diverse taxa of fishes in the Neotropical region. In order to increase the amount of cytogenetic information for Astyanax as well as to exhibit data to subsidize future taxonomic studies, this work analyzed three species of Astyanax: two species are cryptic, and are here reported to live in syntopy (A. abramis and A. lacustris); the first karyotype description for A. pirapuan is also presented. Cytogenetic analyzes reveal a diploid number of 2n=50 chromosomes for three species, yet with differences in their karyotype morphology. The physical mapping of 18S rDNA showed up to thirteen sites in A. pirapuan and two in A. abramis and A. lacustris. The physical mapping of 5S rDNA has proven to be an effective...

Comparing growth in surface and cave morphs of the species Astyanax mexicanus: insights from scales ArchiMer
Simon, Victor; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig; Legendre, Laurent; Ornelas-garcia, Patricia; Espinasa, Luis; Retaux, Sylvie.
Background Life in the darkness of caves is accompanied, throughout phyla, by striking phenotypic changes including the loss or severe reduction in eyes and pigmentation. On the other hand, cave animals have undergone constructive changes, thought to be adaptive, to survive in this extreme environment. The present study addresses the question of the evolution of growth in caves, taking advantage of the comparison between the river-dwelling and the cave-dwelling morphs of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus. Results A sclerochronology approach was undertaken to document the growth of the species in these two very distinct habitats. Scales from 158 wild Astyanax mexicanus specimens were analyzed from three caves (Pachón, Tinaja and Subterráneo) and two...

Comparison on animal production in organic and conventional systems MV&Z
Rossi, Gabriel Augusto Marques; Lemos, Paulo de Paula Lopes.
The market for organic products is increasing globally, seeking to fulfill the needs and expectations of consumers who believe it’s a healthier food. There are many controversies found in studies that assess primarily the physical-chemical, microbiological and the presence of this type of food of animal origin. This review aimed to evaluate the main differences between animal foods such as meat, milk, honey, eggs and fish produced in organic systems compared to those produced in conventional systems. The main differences are related to the physical-chemical food and no relevant differences were found between the possible presence of chemical or biological hazards in food of animal origin.

Complements and Meat Demand in the U.S. AgEcon
Davis, Christopher G.; Stefanova, Stela; Hahn, William F.; Yen, Steven T..
In this study we estimated the price elasticities among meats, vegetables, grains, and potatoes and the impact that different levels of income have on the demand for these commodities. The 2005 Nielsen retail home scan data were used to construct a censored demand system of 14 equations. Results revealed that the uncompensated cross-price elasticities for both low and high-incomes suggest both substitution and complement relationships, while the compensated price elasticities are dominated primarily by substitution relationships. Our findings also revealed that expenditure elasticities among both low and high-income households differ for most commodities.

Composition of the fish fauna in a tropical estuary: the ecological guild approach ArchiMer
Ferreira, Valdimere; Le Loc'H, Francois; Menard, Frederic; Fredou, Thierry; Fredou, Flavia L..
Ecological guilds have been widely applied for understanding the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems. This study describes the composition and the spatio-temporal changes in the structure of the fish fauna and the movements between the estuary and the coast of a tropical estuary, the Itapissuma/Itamaraca Complex (IIC) in northeastern Brazil. Fish specimens were collected during the dry and rainy seasons in 2013 and 2014. A total of 141 species of 34 families were recorded. Almost half of the species (66 species, 47%) were exclusive to the estuary and 50 species (35%) to the coast; 25 (18%) were common to both environments. Marine species were dominant in both richness and biomass as they explore the environment during part of their life cycle,...

Consumer Awareness, Perceptions and Behaviour Towards Farmed Versus Wild Fish AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Brunso, Karen.
This study provides empirical evidence about European consumer awareness, perceptions and behavior towards farmed and wild fish. The evidence is based on three empirical studies: a consumer survey in Belgium in March 2003, focus group discussions with consumers in Belgium and Spain in May 2004, and a pan-European consumer survey with a sample of 4,786 fish consumers in Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Span and Poland in November-December 2004. Consumer awareness about the farmed or wild origin of fish is rather poor, particular among lighter fish user groups. Perceptions are quite diverse across Europe. Furthermore, perceptions often contrast with current scientific evidence, in particular with respect to behalf and nutritional value where consumers...

Consumer Demand for Meat Cuts and Seafood AgEcon
Davis, Christopher G.; Lin, Biing-Hwan; Yen, Steven T..
Household at-home consumption of different types and cuts of meat and fish products is investigated by estimating a large censored demand system with a two-step procedure using ACNielsen's Homescan data. We find different price and expenditure elasticities between low-income and high-income households. High income households are less responsive to price changes, and the substitution patterns also differ between the low- and high-income households. Whereas the uncompensated elasticities suggest a mixture of gross substitutes and complements among the products for both low- and high-income households, the compensated elasticities suggest net substitution is the obvious pattern for the low-income households.

Consumer Interest and Marketing Potential of Information on Fish Labels AgEcon
Pieniak, Zuzanna; Verbeke, Wim.
Food labels are an important source of information to consumers. However, little scientific evidence is available on the type of information consumers seek on product labels and how consumers use food labels. The objective of this study is to assess consumers’ use of mandatory information cues and interest in potential information cues placed on fish labels, packages or shelves in five European countries. A cross-sectional consumer survey was carried out in November-December 2004 in five European countries: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain and a sample representative for age and region within each country has been obtained. Total sample size is 4,786. The results show a high use of on-label information cues; hence, labels were found as...

Contamination chimique du milieu marin : de la mesure à l'évaluation des risques ArchiMer
Abarnou, Alain.
This activity report entitled (“Chemical contamination of the marine environment: from measurement to risk assessment”) summarizes the main stages my career at Ifremer from November 1975 to june 2013. The first chapter deals with the seawater chlorination and chlorinated waters released into the sea, the identification and the conditions of the formation of various by-product of these processes. The second chapter concerns PCBs, their nature, their chemical analysis in environmental matrices. PCBs are considered as the best examples of persistant and bioaccumulable compounds and therefore, in all this report they are flagship contaminants to which other groups of studied substances are compared. The third chapter refers to studies performed within marine...

Contribution of the CASA system, based on open source software, to the assessment of sperm characteristics: informetric and usage-based approaches R. Bras. Zootec.
Neumann,Giovano; Bernardes Júnior,Jurandir Joaquim; Sanches,Paulo Vanderlei; Piana,Pitágoras Augusto; Bombardelli,Robie Allan.
ABSTRACT By using informetric tools, we evaluated the contribution and impact of the open source computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) software on sperm studies, especially pertaining to fish. The article was cited 125 times between 2007 and 2014 in four publication types (articles, doctoral dissertations, master’s theses, and books). Among articles, the number of citations increased at rate of three citations per year and the calculated h-index was 17. Of the studies that cited Wilson-Leedy and Ingermann (2007), fish were the main group of organisms studied (61 articles); of these, 34 articles used the open source CASA, covering 23 marine or freshwater species. Studies conducted in 12 countries were published in 21 journals. Four ways of knowledge...

Cooling of curimba (Prochilodus lineatus) embryos using different concentrations of dimethyl sulphoxide and methanol R. Bras. Zootec.
Machado,Gilmara Junqueira; Murgas,Luis David Solis; Palhares,Priscila Cotta; Assis,Isadora de Lima; Castro,Tássia Flávia Dias.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of using different concentrations (5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5%) of two permeating cryoprotectants, dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and methanol, on Prochilodus lineatus embryos while being subjected to cooling for 2, 4, 6, and 8 h at 4 °C. We analyzed the hatching rate, viable larvae, and counts of hatched and spoiled eggs and those that did not complete their development after cooling. We observed a significant interaction among variables, permeable cryoprotectant concentration, and cooling time, having the increase of these factors caused a reduction in hatching rate. The curimba embryos showed a higher sensitivity to cold at a temperature of 4 °C for 6 and 8 h, directly influencing the production of viable larvae....
